Welcome to the Nurse’s Corner
At KAA, we believe that nursing encompasses much more than just treating physical issues like cuts, colds, or headaches. Our school nurse is here to provide not only medical care but also a compassionate ear for students to share their feelings and concerns. This role requires a commitment to continuous learning, fostering a safe and healthy environment, and offering heartfelt support to our school community.
Immunizations:
To ensure the health and safety of all students, it is essential that vaccinations are kept up to date in accordance with Virginia state law. Please send any updated vaccination records to nurse@kaa-herndon.com at your earliest convenience.
General tips and healthy practices:
Preventative Measures:
Practicing good hygiene is crucial in preventing the spread of germs. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing—use a tissue when available or practice the "elbow cough."
Mental Health:
Mental well-being is vital at every stage of life. It’s important to talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Maintain a balanced diet, get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, engage in regular physical activity, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.
Vision and Hearing Exams:
Hearing and vision are fundamental to effective communication and learning in the classroom. Undiagnosed issues can significantly impact a student’s academic performance. Collaboration between parents and the school is essential to support student success. We encourage parents to actively engage in their children’s health and well-being by promoting respect, responsibility, healthy eating habits, motivation, and positive behavior. Please remember to schedule appointments with an ophthalmologist and an audiologist as needed.
Preventative measures to combat allergic reactions to seasonal allergies:
To help manage seasonal allergies, consider the following preventative measures:
- Administer antihistamines such as Zyrtec or Benadryl as appropriate.
- Upon returning home, change clothing and wash it immediately to reduce pollen exposure indoors.
- A saline nasal rinse can alleviate a runny nose and congestion, while a saltwater gargle can soothe an itchy throat and reduce sneezing.
Thank you for being an integral part of our school community. Together, we can ensure a healthy and supportive environment for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
