Commonwealth Conversation on Cell Phones and Social Media
On September 19, 2024, King Abdullah Academy along with Virginia communities participated in a live broadcast titled Commonwealth Conversation on Cell Phones and Social Media.
The event, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and led by First Lady Suzanne Youngkin, featured Dr. Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation. Dr. Haidt discussed the impact of social media and excessive phone use on the increasing rates of anxiety and depression among children and teens.
The discussion focused on reclaiming childhood by reducing screen time, aligning with Governor Glenn Youngkin’s policy for phone-free education. The event also prompted conversations around promoting balanced lifestyles for children and urged schools to reconsider their use of technology.
After the fireside chat, KAA hosted a virtual community discussion about the challenges posed by technology, with an emphasis on finding local solutions. One parent suggested making this a topic for students to discuss, believing that all should participate to understand both the impact and potential benefits. Another parent liked how KAA is implementing recess time for middle and high school students to encourage more tech-free playtime.
